NOVO Q&A
Date : 2020 / 09 / 29 23:55:43

Q: With the recent social distancing, we spend a lot of time alone these days. Has your work or daily life

changed much with this new situation?

- I spend more time in my studio than usual now that there’s less social activity. I continue to search for inspiration indoors,

taking care of my plants and watching films. I reexamine and rearrange the objects I have and bring them into my work.

Q: What do you miss the most these days?

- I miss everything from the past, going somewhere, meeting someone. I never imagined these activities would be so limiting.

I realize I took them for granted when it was readily available.

Q: There’s a sense of nostalgia in your work. Is this sense of longing something from a personal experience of loss?

Or is it simply nostalgia of the past times?

- In most of my works, I draw upon my personal experiences and the objects together. One can separate the objects and

experiences but I collect objects mostly because I want to remember the encounter. When I look at the objects around me,

I want to sense the past happenings again rather than simply remember and miss those times.

I thought I would experience this again whenever I want to. But maybe if the question of  ‘when will I be able to do this again?’

continues, it will become nostalgia.

Q: You seem very kind and positive most of the time, when do you feel angry or negative?

- When I feel uncomfortable? (with a smile)

Q: How do you select the objects and where do you usually find them?

- Anywhere and everywhere. If and when I have the desire to find something!

I don’t have a specific routine or agenda. I simply enjoy the energy the object gives off. I choose things

that are appropriately old enough. I have a habit of buying objects on display even when I buy new objects.

Q: What is your favorite object and why?

- I can’t choose one but I do collect objects made of silver the most. Ironically, I’m always attracted to that sense of

coolness silver objects have when they lose the shine.

Q: You challenge yourself to various experiences in various places. What’s the next challenge you want to try out?

- I want to do more spatial work where I work with the whole space. I’ve worked from my studio,

to gallery spaces and then to stage. I want to continue to expand like this into other genres.

Q: Other than the objects you collect, what is your inspiration? Do you have any films or people you like?

- Just like I find objects everywhere, I find inspiration everywhere. But I gain the most inspiration from conversations.

Who I meet and what conversations I have with that person affect me a lot mentally. These conversations create energy

that makes me a stronger individual but it’s not necessarily a direct inspiration for the work. When I feel the trust and

encouragement that give me confidence and affirmation, I’m happy working on anything.

Q: I heard that you enjoy running the marathon, what does ‘running’ mean to you?

- It’s as natural as having a cup of coffee a day to me. I don’t have any special meaning for it. They say life is a marathon.

I simply have to run for a long time at a same speed.
