장콸은 1989년 울산에서 태어났으며 애니메이션을 전공했다. SNS나 블로그를 통해 대중과 소통하며 패션 업체 등과의 협업으로 자신을 알려왔다. 이 후 Colección Solo House 레지던스에서 회화 작업을 시작한 뒤 2016년 에브리데이몬데이 갤러리에서 첫 개인전을 가졌다. 장콸에 대해 초현실적인 소녀 인물 중심의 독특한 화풍을 떠올리기 쉽지만, 동양화 물감과 안료에 다른 매체를 혼합해 자신만의 동양화 스타일을 구축하며 회화 작가로서 입지를 다지고 있다. 장콸은 이러한 회화적인 시도와 더불어 성별에 대한 사회의 프레임에 의문을 불어넣는 작업을 지향한다. 작품에 회화 작가로서의 정체성과 특정 사회의 특정 성별로 산다는 정체성을 포괄적으로 고민하며 작품 세계를 만들어 가고 있다.

Jang Koal was born in 1989 in Ulsan. She majored in animation and found her place as an artist communicating with the audience through SNS, blogs as well as by collaborating with the fashion industry. She started painting at the Colección Solo Hous as an artist in residence and held her first solo exhibition in 2016 at Everyday Mooonday. She is most known for her surreal portrayal of female characters as protagonists. She creates an amalgamation of mediums with oriental painting pigments as a painter, searching for her own style of Orientalism. Jang Koal further challenges the social framework of gender roles in her work. She is developing her own art world that encompasses her struggles in identifying herself as a painter living as a specific gender in a specific society.
