일본 그래픽아티스트 아키노리 오이시(Akinori Oishi)는 치밀하고 빽빽하게 캐릭터드로잉을 채워나가는 작업으로 알려졌다. 이는 그가 그래픽아티스트 이면서도 ‘드로우홀릭(Drawaholic)’이라는 수식어가 항상 따라다니는 이유이다. 이번 개인전에서는 그가 한국에 머물면서 작업한 유화 페인팅과 캐릭터드로잉뿐만 아니라 다양한 매체를 이용한 작업들도 선보여진다. 작가는 멀티미디어, 프로그래밍, 음향기술과 그의 작업을 접목하여 아날로그 방식의 드로잉이 다양한 모습으로 보여질 가능성을 열어나갔다. 실제 이미지에 가상의 정보를 합성해 보여주는 증강현실 ‘AR(Augmented Reality)’ 프로그램이 그중 하나이며 이번 전시에서도 이를 통해 작가의 드로잉을 색다르게 경험할 수 있다.

그의 작업은 일상에서 시작된다. 자신의 소소한 일상을 작은 캐릭터드로잉으로 남기는데 작가 특유의 행복하고 따스한 시각으로 그의 일상을 엿볼 수 있다. 작은 캐릭터드로잉과 실제 풍경을 함께 사진으로 찍기도 하는데, 이 같은 100여 장의 사진 작업을 폴라로이드 필름으로 인화한 것이 이번 전시에서 볼 수 있는 'Aki dailygram'이다.

"나는 모든 것에는 영혼이 있고 무언가가 깃들어 있다는 생각을 한다. 그래서 살아있는 것이나 살아있지 않는 것이나 상관없이 그들의 살아있는 표정을 느낀다."

작가에게는 자신의 작업에서 캐릭터가 어디서 기인했는지, 그게 무엇인지는 크게 중요하지 않다. 그것보다는 모양과 형태 자체에 흥미가 많다. 이러한 연유에서인지 그의 캐릭터들은 정체를 알아내기가 쉽지 않고 어떤 것은 아예 이에 대해 확신하는 것이 불가능해 보이기도 하다. 밀도 높은 캐릭터 드로잉 은 가까이 다가가서 보면 기하학적인 모양의 익살스러운 캐릭터들이 제각각의 소리를 내고 있다. 모두 다른 형상을 한 독특하고 재미있는 캐릭터들이 공간을 빼곡히 채워가면서 또 다른 느낌의 흐름과 하모니를 만들어낸다.

그의 캐릭터는 몇 개의 점과 선으로 단순하고 간결하게 이루어지고 모두 같은 미소를 띠고 있다. 복사, 붙여넣기가 손쉬운 디지털 시대에 그는 집요하게 반복적인 캐릭터를 손편지 쓰듯이 모두 그려낸다. 어디 하나 모나지 않은 작고 귀여운 이 '스마일'들은 우리에게 상냥하고 조용히, 때로는 수다스럽게 말을 걸어온다. 작가는 관람객들이 이 셀 수 없이 많은 다양한 모양의 ‘스마일’들을 보고 삶 속에서 자기 자신만의 ‘스마일’을 찾기를 희망한다.

Akinori Oishi, a Japan based graphic artist, is well known for his detailed character drawings. He is known as a graphic artist and 'Drawholic'. This solo show is a collection of works done in Seoul in multiple mediums from oil, drawing and installation. He experiments with multimedia, programming and sound to expand imaginative possibilities of his analogue drawings. Using a program called 'Augmented Reality', this show will bring a whole new experience to his drawings.

His works start in the everyday life. He adds the small happenings of everyday life into his characters letting the viewers experience a glimpse of his warmth and happiness. Also presented in this show is 'Aki Dailygram', a series of Polaroid photos of his small character drawings in various everyday life environments.

'I see a soul in everything. I feel life in both living and non-living things. '

Oishi is more interested in the shape and form of his characters than where each character comes from. His characters are difficult to recognize sometimes. When you look closely at his 'Drawholic' character drawings, the geometric shapes speak in its individual voices. Each character in its own shape and form fills up the space creating another harmony.

The characters are made of dots and line, simple and concise with the same smile. He draws out the repetitive pattern of characters in a truly drawholic manner. The small yet powerful 'smile' speaks to us gently and quietly. Oishi hopes the viewers to find their own individual smile within his countless number of various smiles.
