본의 아니게 지나가는 사람들 저마다의 일상을 가만히 지켜보게 되는 시간이 주어질 때가 있다. 시선은 이리저리 자리를 옮겨 다니면서 사람들이 걸친 옷, 그들의 행동, 표정을 향했다가, 옆 사람의 휴대폰 화면에 올라가 있다가 눈치를 받는가 싶으면 이내 아무도 없는 구석 어딘가를 겨우 비집고 내려간다. 옆에서 나누는 재미있는 대화까지 들릴 때면 행여나 나도 모르게 따라 웃지 않을까 숨을 한번 크게 내쉬고 괜히 저 멀리 보이는 아무 글씨나 숫자를 읽기도 한다.

앤디 리멘터(Andy Rementer)의 그림을 찬찬히 보고 있으면 이처럼 타인의 일상을 목격하게 되는 그 시간이 떠오른다. 높고 낮은 건물들과 옥상, 카페와 가게, 다양한 언어로 빛나고 있는 간판들, 택시와 전철, 자전거를 끌고 가는 사람. 반쯤 태운 담배꽁초, 공사 후 남겨진 벽돌 따위들은 마치 이 자리가 내 자리인 마냥 길바닥에 누워있다. 작가가 바라보았을 도시는 유럽과 뉴욕이었겠지만 이국적인 인상이라기보다 도리어 친근한 기분이 드는 데에는 앞서 나열한 지극히 일상적이고 만국 공통적인 도시 속 사물들이 한 몫을 하고 있다.

다양한 색과 높은 대비에서 오는 첫인상은 산뜻하고 발랄하지만 잘 차려입은 옷과 세련된 도시의 모습들 사이로 단절과 외로움이 느껴지는 건 기분 탓만은 아닐 것이다. 보도블록 틈새의 풀, 뒤에 있는 간판의 글씨까지 날리는 선 없이 처음부터 끝까지 눌러 그리는 정직하고 꾸밈없는 그의 선처럼 도시에서 살아가고 있는 사람들, 우리의 모습을 담담하게 그려낸다.

“수많은 다른 사람들과 밀착되어 살아가는 것이 불가피한 도시의 환경과 아마 여기서 비롯되었을 불안함을 안고 있는 사람들. 나는 다소 자신 없고 내향적인 사람들에게 흥미를 느낀다. 그들에게서 미스터리함을 느끼며 전반적으로 나는 반영웅적 인물들에게 더욱 끌린다.”

ANDY REMENTER solo exhibition at EVERYDAY MOOONDAY는 하나의 테마를 가지지 않고 한국에서의 첫 전시인 만큼 자신을 소개하고 우리를 둘러싼 세상을 바라보는 작가의 시선을 나누고 공감하는 기회가 되는 전시라고 볼 수 있다.

Andy Rementer, an American artist, presented his first solo show in Asia in Everyday Mooonday Seoul in 2014. He participated in various exhibitions and projects in Tokyo and Hong Kong thereafter, followed by shows in New York and Milan. He has shown his works through commissioned and collaborative works in various areas including campaign ads, animated MTVs and posters. In 2017 spring, Rementer returns to Seoul with a new solo show! This exhibition will present over twenty works of paintings, drawings and limited edition ceramic works produced in collaboration with Nam ceramic works.

Viewers, who know Andy Rementer's works well, will recognize the subtle changes added to his sense of unique form and vintage color in his new works. In his previous works, he uses acrylic paint focusing on color planes and lines whereas his interest recently shifts in giving the work volume with a special method. Hence he starts using oil medium to convey more dimension and in-depth colors. Oil paint as a medium takes a long time for its pigments to settle. This plays a significant role in creating a heightened sense of softness and weight through its natural blend.

Rementer is known for his drawings. His perspective of the world of straight and flawless impression is directly reflected in his lines. His drawing notes are precise, clean and consistent giving it an appearance of a type printed hieroglyphic characters. Unlike other sketchbooks, there are hardly any traces of erased marks, under-lines and rushed written notes, not even a touch of empty space. The exhibition will also show some of his drawing books full of his meticulous observations of characters, conversations and unfamiliar types.

Not many of the characters in his drawings are based on existing characters. In fact they are his visual language and a result of years of independently developed ways of drawing a face. He simplifies and minimalizes the characters and creates harmony within. They are eerily connected yet slightly different from each other, together yet separated. He avoids adding too much emotional facial expression on the characters to avoid distractions and unnecessary influences on simply appreciating the drawings. The contrast of various bright tone colors and its moderate emotional expressions make the drawings even more interesting. Such subtleties and contrasts let the viewers observe with more care and imagination, creating a mysterious mood behind the characters and objects that appear normal.
