뚜렷하고 깔끔한 선과 그 사이사이를 채워나가는 원색의 컬러블로킹 스타일 일러스트레이터 김용오. 그의 다채로운 색들은 작가가 경험했던 시기인 90년대부터 2000년대 초의 복고풍 감성과 만화적인 위트, 표현과 만나 강렬하고 화려한 판타지와 같은 인상을 풍긴다.

그림 속 인물들의 파란색, 보라색, 빨갛고 샛노란 형형색색 피부색을 보고 있노라면 작가에게 있어서 색은 있는 그대로를 재현하는 역할과는 거리가 있다는 것이 느껴진다. 그는 인물과 사물, 공간과 풍경의 개별적 특성, 혹은 화자의 시점에서 느낀 인상과 분위기를 나타내는 하나의 작업 방식으로 색을 선정한다. 구성과 색감에 대해서는 그가 관심이 많았던 분야인 패션 화보, 뮤직비디오, 스타일리시한 영상을 선보이는 영화 감독들로부터 영향을 받기도 했다.

낯선 것에 대한 호기심과 모험심이 컸던 작가는 인도여행에서 겪었던 예상치 못했던 일들과, 우연히 만났던 사람들과의 인연에 대한 이야기들을 엮어 일러스트작업과 함께 책으로 출판하기도 했다. 그 이후로도 태국, 홍콩, 캄보디아, 베트남 등지를 여행 하면서 다양한 문화와 삶의 방식을 만날 수 있었다. 휴가를 즐기기 위해 떠나온 사람에서부터 자급자족 하며 장기간 여행을 이어나가는 사람, 산악지대나 오지를 여행하는 트래커(trekker), 히피(hippie) 등 각자의 목적과 여행 철학을 가진 사람들로부터 자극을 받았다. 슬로건을 하나씩 품고 살아가는 사람들을 소재로 다양한 삶의 방식을 제안 하는 ‘LIFE 시리즈’, 여행 중 경험한 허위에 대하여 인물과 상황의 역설적인 표현으로 풀어낸 ‘FAKE 시리즈’를 제작 하였다.

나를 둘러 싼 많은 것들에 익숙해지고 무뎌진 채로 살아가고 있다면, 막연한 기대와 모험심으로 예측 불가능한 곳에 자신을 내던졌던 내 속의 방랑자를 다시금 깨워보는 건 어떨까? 당장에 모든 걸 내려놓고 떠나지 않더라도 매일 같은 시각에 지나가는 길과 매일 마주하는 사람들, 모든 일상의 순간들도 새로운 색채로 보여지지 않을까?

Kim Yong-oh, a color-blinking illustrator of primary colors filling the line between clear and neat lines. His colorful colors meet retro-style sensations, cartoon wit and expressions from the 90s to the early 2000s, a period the writer experienced.

If you see the blue, purple, red, and yellow colors of the characters in the painting, you can feel that the color is far from the role of recreating itself. He selects colors as a way of working, representing the individual characteristics of characters and objects, spaces and landscapes, or the impressions and moods of the speaker's point of view. As for composition and color, he was also influenced by film directors who showed fashion pictorials, music videos and stylish videos, areas he was interested in.

The author, who was curious and adventurous about strangers, compiled stories about unexpected things he had experienced on his trip to India and his connections with people he encountered and published them in a book along with illustration work. Since then, I have been able to meet various cultures and ways of life while traveling to Thailand, Hong Kong, Cambodia and Vietnam. From those who have left to enjoy their vacation, to those who are self-sufficient and carry on long-term trips, to trekkers and hippies who travel in mountainous or remote areas, were stimulated by people with their own purposes and travel philosophies. It produced the LIFE series, which suggests diverse ways of life for people living with slogans one by one, and the FAKE series, which is a paradoxical expression of people and situations who have experienced falsehoods during the journey.

If you're getting used to many of the things around me and living in obscurity, why don't you wake up again the wanderer in me who threw himself into the unpredictable with vague expectations and adventure? Even if you don't put everything down and leave it all at once, wouldn't every day look like a new color, the way you pass every day, the people you encounter every day?
