뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 한국작가 스티키몽거(박주희). 그녀의 작품세계는 예쁘장한 소녀들이 주를 이루고 있음에도 불구하고 전반적으로 스산하고 기괴한 기운을 뿜어낸다. 이는 한국에서 여중, 여고를 다녔던 스티키몽거 본인의 소녀시절에 대한 인상에서 시작되었다.

그녀의 기억 속 ‘소녀’들은 규율과 학칙을 바탕으로 단정한 제복, 비슷한 머리스타일을 하고 있어야만 했으며, 무조건 잘 통과해야만 하는 입시라는 최종 관문을 앞두고 엄습하는 거대한 불안을 버텨내어야 했다. 보통 부푼 꿈을 품은 아름다운 시기로 회상하는 그 시절을 본인은 껍데기 같은 제복을 입은 가련한 풍경으로만 기억하고 있다는 것이 유감이라 얘기 하지만 아이러니하게도 그 불안과 그로테스크한 기억이 바로 그녀 작업의 원동력이다.

작업에서 많이 보여지는 점들, 줄무늬 같은 패턴과 반복적으로 나타나는 이미지들은 제복을 입은 소녀들의 군집에 대한 작가의 관심에서 파생된 것이다. 유니폼을 입고 극도로 통제되어 사람보다는 마네킹에 가까운 모습을 한 엘리베이터걸을 통해 억압된 현대인을 표현한 일본 사진작가 야나기 미와(Miwa yanagi), 키신 시노야마(Kishin Sinotama)의 소녀 사진들에서 영감을 받기도 했다. 스티키몽거의 소녀들의 모습은 살면서 끝임 없이 통제 받고 남들과 맞추어가며 살아가는 우리의 모습과 다름 없다. 하지만 작가는 다소 어두운 이야기 끝에 ‘코스믹 걸스’가 품고 있는 우주와도 같은 무한한 각자의 잠재력을 내비쳐주고 있다.

스티키몽거의 작업과정은 수묵화나 펜화로 그림을 그린 후 디지털작업을 통해 직접 시트커팅기계로 뽑는 공정을 거친다. Sticky vinyl은 그녀가 아날로그 작업의 손맛과 디지털 작업의 용이함 두 가지를 모두 충족시키는 방식을 찾다가 시행착오 끝에 채택한 방식이라고 한다. 전시 공간을 단순히 캔버스와 캔버스가 걸리는 벽으로 한정 짓지 않고 공간 전체를 활용해 배치함으로써 보는 사람으로 하여금 그녀의 상상 속으로 방문하는 기분이 들것이다.

Stickymonger (Joohee Park) is a Korean artist based in New York. Despite the beautiful female characters in her work, her world of art gives off a strange and mysterious energy. Her story begins from her own teenage years attending women's middle and high school in Korea.

The 'girls' in her memories were enforced to dress in clean uniforms and similar hairstyle by strict school regulations. They were in constant fear of having to pass the final gate of the once in a lifetime university entrance exam. Normally, a beautiful nostalgic moment of hopes and dreams in people's lives, it is empathetic that she remembers this time as a cynical shell of uniformed life. Ironically, that very anxiety and grotesque memories are the inspirations of her work.

The dots, stripes and repetitive patterns quite often seen in her work are reflections of the crowd of girls dressed in uniforms. The photographs of young elevator girls in their perfect uniforms seemingly closer to a mannequin than a human being by young Japanese artists Miwa Yanagi and Kishin Sinotma are also an inspiration for Stickymonger. The girls in her work epitomize the everyday lives of our own, endlessly imposed to fit into the cookie cutter human. Within this story of darkness, she is however hopeful in showing individual's infinite universe -like potential in 'Cosmic girl'.

Stickymonger works with ink and wash painting, ink, digital medium and sheet cutting machine to create her work. This sticky vinyl method is a result of her trial and error in experimenting to find a way to suffice both her hand drawn feel and digital efficiency. Rather than simply hanging canvas to canvas along the walls, this solo exhibition presents the whole space letting the audiences visit Stickymonger's world of imagination.
