비주얼 아티스트 노보, 세라믹 아티스트 정준영 두 작가의 인연은 몇 해 전 서로의 작업을 우연히 접하면서부터 시작되었다. 서로의 작업에 큰 흥미를 가졌기에 두 작가는 많은 이야기를 나누고 배우기도 하며 관계를 이어왔다. 두 작가가 함께 보낸 시간과 그 동안 주고받은 이야기들은 자연스럽게 하나로 빚어지고 새겨지고 구워져 작품들로 탄생했다.

정준영 작가는 도자에 자연 고유의 형태와 색을 담아 생활 속에서 활용하고자 하는 욕심이 작업의 원천이라 말한다. 도자라 하면 깨어지기 쉬운 것이어서 항상 조심히 다루어야 한다는 생각이 앞서 들기 마련이지만 정준영 작가의 도자는 조금 다르다. 그는 사람들이 위에 올라가고 밀고 만질 수 있도록 고민 끝에 철골구조 뼈대와 콘크리트 등을 더하여 도자에 강도를 높였다. 그렇게 구워내는 흙은 음식을 담고 물건을 올리는 것은 물론이고 앉고 바퀴를 굴리며 달릴 수 있는 의자가 된다. 흙으로 삶 속에 자연스럽게 재미를 더하여 주는 것 이는 정준영 작가가 세상과 작업으로 소통하는 방식이기도 하다.

노보 작가는 자신을 가장 있는 그대로 솔직하게 표현할 수 있는 설치, 드로잉, 타투, 타이포그래피스타일을 기반으로 문화 다방면에서 자신의 메시지를 전하고 있는 아티스트이다. 유년시절 그림을 그리던 행복한 기억과 순수함 잃지 않고 담아내는 노보 작가의 두들링은 캔버스나 사람의 신체뿐만 아니라 옷, 오브제, 사진 등 어느 곳에나 제약 없이 새겨진다. 단순하고 즉흥적인 선들이 만들어내는 이미지들 속에도 강한 메시지를 담아내는 힘은 세상을 향한 그의 따뜻한 마음과 어린아이와 같은 호기심에서 비롯되는 것 같다.

표현하는 방식은 다르지만 영혼이 닮은 두 작가가 만나 함께 작품을 만들어냈다. 이 특별한 일련의 과정을 옆에서 지켜봐온 추예원 프로듀서의 말을 빌리면 이번 전시는 형과 동생 같은 두 소년들이 신나게 잘 논 놀이터와 같을 것이다.

Visual artist Novo and ceramic artist Junyoung Jeong first met a few years ago through their works. With keen interest in each other’s work, the two artists have continued their relationship sharing many stories and learning from each other. The time they spent together and the stories they shared together, naturally carved, shaped and fired into one unifying work.

For Jeong, the core of his work is in his passion to immerse nature's inherent shape and color in his ceramics and use them in everyday life. When we think of ceramics, we tend to imagine something fragile and to handle them with much care. Jeong's ceramic works however are slightly different. After much consideration, he strengthened the tolerance of his ceramic works by adding metal frame works and concrete for people to climb on, push and touch. Clay fired through this process is used not only to place food and objects, but also become a chair with wheels we can sit on and roll around. Adding fun in life with clay is how Jeong communicates with the world through his work.

Novo portrays his messages through various fields of art and culture. His works are based on various styles of installation, drawing, tattoo and typography, mediums that enable him to express himself in the most honest way as he is. Novo's doodles preserve the happy memories and naiveté from his memories of drawing during his childhood. These doodles are painted, drawn and engraved on canvas, human body, clothing, objects, photographs and more without limits. The powerful messages within the images created by simple and spontaneous lines seem to derive from his warm heart and childlike curiosity towards the world.

The two artists are different in their ways of expressing but alike in spirit. Together they created this exhibition. To borrow the words of Yewon Chu, a producer who stayed close throughout this special process, "this exhibition will be like a playground where two brothers had the time of their lives."
