HOW DO YOU DOUGH

Flabjacks Solo Exhibition

Feb 10 - Mar 11, 2018

Overview
/

FLABJACKS represents a series of weirdly and wonderfully wild chubby creatures created by visual artist Ton Mak. The friendly creatures live in a wonderland from afar, with stories of their own. The art forms are best known for representing seemingly mundane situations and objects in everyday life. The works have a light hearted and simple positive energy to them. To date, FLABJACKS has collaborated with brands from around the world such as Nike, Gucci, Swiss Air, as well as various real estate projects.

Ton Mak was born in Hong Kong in 1988, and grew up between New Zealand, England and Hong Kong. In 2010, she graduated from University College London as an Anthropology student. Previously, Ton has worked in Media Arts Lab, an advertising partner to Apple, where she developed FLABJACKS’s signature expressions through a personal meditative doodling project after work as a strategist.

Ton’s playful approach in the FLABJACKS series is underpinned by an obsession with the topic of animism. The belief that our material world also embodies supernatural powers of its own, filled with phenome nological potentials. Whether they are humans, strange creatures, or wild beings, FLABJACKS believe that even seemingly “dead” objects have souls of their own. “How Do You Dough?” hopes to bring a sense of familiarity to children and adults alike, by reimagining mundane objects, food forms and happenings. There is a freeing and liberating sensation in the creative process when rethinking the movement of a perfectly still object such as the banana for example. Each and every character should feel like a warm and friendly hug. And hopefully, can make everyone smile.

From drawings, paintings to large-scale soft sculptures, FLABJACKS also explores mundane patterns of humanity with underlying wit and humor. Much of the artwork immediately encapsulates pitfalls and joys in everyday life in witty vignettes of somewhat familiarly scenarios. Through the use of subtle expressions and small details, FLABJACKS’s characters feel instantly relatable. Drawing inspiration from social media happenings, familiar strangers, and personal experiences, the illustrations express and provoke an array of human emotions, from intense excitement, joy to anxiety and angst. These creatures are all relatable in their different ways.
