장콸 작가는 지난 전시 ‘GIRL SCOUTS’(2016)에서 처음 원화 작업들을 선보였다. 작가 특유의 강렬한 스타일과 동양화 물감 등이 조화를 이루면서 한결 깊고 새로운 모습으로 나타났다. 그림 속 호기심에 가득 찬 소녀들의 천진 살벌한 모습에는 막힘이 없었다. 소녀들의 뇌리 속을 부유하며 꼬리에 꼬리를 무는 질문들은 먼 미지의 세계에서 바로 자기 자신에까지 돋쳤다.

작가의 두 번째 전시 ‘PRIVATE LIFE’가 3월 24일부터 5월 6일까지 에브리데이몬데이에서 진행된다. 이번에도 한지 위에 물감을 쌓아 올리는 동양화 기법으로 작업하였으며 한층 숙련되고 절제된 표현 세밀한 선 속에 응집된 에너지는 더 큰 울림이 되어 다가온다. 또 하나의 자아를 가지고 있을 것만 같은 검고 긴 머리칼, 날카롭고 강한 눈매를 가진 소녀들은 여전히 기이하고 스산한 기운을 풍기고 있다. 다만 소녀들의 시선이 어느 부분엔가로 옮겨가 초점을 맞추고 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있다.

낯선 바깥 세계로부터 자신에게로 소녀들의 시선이 향한다. 자신을 둘러싼 환경과 사회 속에서 형성되고 있는 자신의 모습. 그 속에 억지로 구겨 넣은 것. 번듯하게 입은 자신의 치마 끝자락을 들춰 올리고, 옷깃을 풀어헤쳐 펼쳐 보인 그들의 속은 어떤 모습인가. 내가 마땅하고 알맞다 기대한 것은 또 어떤 모습이었던가 다시 생각해보게 한다.

Jang Koal presented her original works for the first time in the last exhibition 'GIRL SCOUTS (2016)'. Creating a fine balance between her distinctive style of intensity and East Asian Paint medium, the works demonstrated an insightful and new look. The girls in her work are full of curiosity and innocence. Floating within the minds of these girls are endless questions leading into an unknown world and ultimately all the way to oneself.

Jang Koal's second exhibition 'PRIVATE LIFE' opens on March 24th and continues until May 6th at Everyday Mooonday. With East Asian painting technique of multiple layered paint on hanji (tradit ional Korean paper hand-made from the mulberry tree), the work touches us with reverberation of energy collected from a developed sense of moderate expression and delicate lines. However the girls in her work possess a contradictory identity and give off an eerie and bleak mood with their long black hair and sharp strong eyes. One can feel their eyes moving to focus on something unknown.

Their eyes move toward self from the strange outside world. The self formed within the surrounding environment and society. Self forced into society. Lifting the edge of the skirts and unbuttoning the collars, what is underneath that? It makes one think again on what one expects to be an appro priate image of self.
