좋아하는 것들을 떠올리면 기분이 한결 좋아진다. Novo는 자신이 좋아하는 것들로 가득 채워진 작업실에서 늘 그림을 그린다. 작가의 작업실에는 캔버스와 물감, 오랜 시간 모아온 오브제와 책들 그리고 낡은 앞치마까지도 각자의 자리가 있다. 그리고 어딘가 다녀오면 좋아하는 것들이 그 곳에 또 쌓인다.

Novo는 아주 다양한 종류의 낡고 예쁜 것들을 모으는 사람이다. 처음엔 좋아하는 것을 하나 둘 수집하고 기록하는 방법을 배웠고, 그 다음으로는 곁에 두면서 관찰하는 것을 익혔다. 이제는 지극히 사적인 취향으로 선별한 물건이 가득 채워진 공간에서 그것들을 오롯이 나만의 것으로 재해석하여 캔버스에 그려낸다. 그는 시간이 지나도 빛을 잃지 않고, 빛을 잃어도 문득 되살아나는 매력을 가진 것들이 곁에 있을 때 행복함을 느낀다고 했다. 이는 어쩌면 스스로 더 행복해지기 위해 속해서 이어 나가는 행동일지도 모른다. 나아가 이 정체성을 즐기면서 어떤 것들에 영향을 받을지 스스로 선택한다. 그의 작품들을 보면 사물들이 분명 우리에게 영향을 미친다는 것을 알 수 있다.

먹고 사는데 결정적인 영향을 끼치지는 않지만 우리를 행복하게 만드는 아름다운 것들은 Novo만의 ‘Still Life’ 속에 가득하다. 우리는 모두 꾸준히 행복하기 위해 노력해야만 한다.

Thinking about things you like, makes you smile. Novo always works in his artist studio, filled with things he loves. In his studio, the canvas, paints, various objects and books he’s collected for a long time, even an old worn-out apron, all have their own place. When he visits a place and comes back, he brings back he brings back objects he likes and adds to the collection.

Novo is a collector of various, old and beautiful objects. He started collecting and recording things he likes, then he learned to observe them carefully, keeping them close by. In his artist studio, surrounded by his own personally hand selected objects, he recreates his own portrayal of these collections onto the canvas. He says he feels content when he’s next to these timeless objects, objects that keep shining and when it does lose its light, it comes alive again with something new. This pattern of his behavior may be something he continues, to make himself happier. He enjoys this identity and picks things he aspires to. Novo’s artworks express how these objects influence us.

It may not affect us directly on our daily diet and survival but embedded in Novo’s still life are full of beautiful objects that brighten our day. We must continue to try and keep this light shining.
