Mystery of Feeling
갤러리 EM은 12월24일부터 1월29일까지 열리는 브라이언 로버슨의 개인전 FEELS를 통해 “감정: 신경전달 물질에 대한 단순한 신체적 반응”이라는 작가의 탐구가 담긴 작품 12점을 선보인다.
작가는 이전 작업에서 보여준 ‘사실적 묘사와 지극히 개인적인 의미를 담은 오브제의 병치를 통한 발상의 전환’에서 나아가, 이번 작업을 통해 “각자의 감정, 사고, 행동의 주체가 과연 자신인가?” 에 대한 질문을 던지고자 한다.
이러한 작가의 연구는 우리로 하여금 감정의 타당성 그리고 합리성이란 허구/허상의 것이며, 우리는 그저 미미한 신경세포들의 거대한 집합체일 뿐, 주체적 사고에 대한 과신과 앎에 대한 자시(自恃)는 어쩌면 스스로의 무지성에 대한 무지이며, 이것은 나의 기준과 잣대로 타인과 사회를 판단하는 오류를 범하고, 나아가 편견/아집/고집을 만들어 냄에 대해 확장적 사고를 가능하게 한다.
작품 속 극사실적(hyper-realism) 묘사가 돋보이는 상체는 작업의 대상인 작가 지인의 의상을 세밀하게 묘사한 것이며, 대상과의 교감에서 즉각적으로 떠오르는 신경전달 물질을 인물의 묘사대신 작품에 표현한 것이 이번 FEELS 시리즈의 특징이라 할 수 있다.
이는 인물에 대한 작가의 주관적 해석이 포함되어 있기에 대상이 정해진 초상화이자 또한 작가의 자화상이라고도 할 수 있으며, 신체의 사실적 묘사와 신경세포의 병치는 초현실주의의 데페이즈망(dépaysement)에서 오는 기이함을 느끼게끔 한다.
이번 전시를 통해 시각적 왜곡에서 오는 낯섦을 바탕으로 익숙한 것에 대한 사고의 확장을 꾀하며 우리의 감정과 그에 따른 반응에 대해 알아차림을, 사고하는 과정의 미스터리를 탐닉해보는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

Mystery of Feeling
Gallery EM is proudly presents 12 works containing Brian Robertson’s exploration of “emotion: simple bodily responses to neurotransmitters” through his solo exhibition from December 24th to January 29th. The artist goes beyond the ‘thinking outside the box through the juxtaposition of realistic descriptions and objects with personal meaning that subvert expectation’ shown in previous works, and this time, through the series of 'FEELS', he would like to question about “Are we really the subject of our own emotions, thoughts, and actions?”
His study on chemical reactions leads us to think expansively that the validity and cogency of emotions can often be delusion, that we are a massive collection of cells, and that overconfidence in subjective thinking and self-acceptance of knowledge are perhaps ignorance of one’s own ignorance, which leads to errors in judging others and society with individual standards, and furthermore creates prejudice/egoism/stubbornness.
The bust of portrait, which stands out in its hyper-realism, is a detailed depiction of the clothing of the artist’s friend, who is the model of work, and the point of 'FEELS' series is that the neurotransmitter that immediately comes to mind to artist from the interaction with the model are expressed in the work instead of facial description. Since this includes the artist’s personal interpretation of the model, it can be a portrait but also a self-portrait of the artist, and the juxtaposition of the realistic depiction of the body and the cells that are invisible make us feel the eccentricity that comes from the dépaysement of surrealism.
Through this exhibition, the EM Gallery hopes that it will be a time to indulge in the mystery of the process of thinking, noticing emotions and reactions, seeking to expand thinking about familiar things based on the unfamiliarity that comes from visual distortion.
