김희수작가의 개인전 normal life가 에브리데이몬데이에서 열린다. normal life라는 타이틀로 전시를 가지는 것은 지난해에 이어 이번이 두 번째 이다. 지난 일년 동안 작업한 페인팅과 드로잉이 대거 전시될 예정이다.

이따금씩 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 타인을 주시하게 되는 순간이 있다. 이를테면 일면식 없는 사람들과 어깨를 맞대고 한참을 흔들리고 앉아 있어야 하는 버스나 지하철에 올랐을 때라던지, 식당이나 카페, 병원과 같은 장소에 있을 때 특히 그러하다. 보통 대화를 나누거나 휴대폰이나 책자를 들여다 보거나 무난한 빈 구석 어디쯤 시선을 걸쳐 놓고 멍하니 있기도 한다. 공공 장소라는 한계 속에서도 각자 나름의 시간을 오만 가지 방법으로 사유한다. 과연 나와 같은 곳에 존재하는 사람이 맞는지 의구심이 들게 하는 모습도 있는가 하는 반면에, 그들 속에서 나의 모습을 발견하기도 한다.

김희수 작가는 일상에 주의를 기울인다. 자신의 일상을 관찰하고 기록한다. 아까 봤던 작은 벌레, 아버지와 나누었던 소소한 대화, 깊이 스며드는 어떤 감정, 당장 내일 엎어질 지도 모를 크고 작은 다짐들까지. 작업 소재는 사물이 될 때도 있지만 주를 이루는 것은 단연 인물이다. 무심해 보이는 거친 선으로 인물의 섬세한 감정을 담아 낸다. 터져 나오는 환희 라던지 무너져 내리는 절망 같이 무언가가 극적으로 표출되는 건 아니다. 오히려 부각되어 그려지는 그 얼굴에는 표정도 없다. 더하여 속 마음이 내비친다는 인물의 눈은 대부분 반쯤 감겨 있거나 아주 감겨 있다. 그들의 감정을 손쉽게 어느 이모티콘 하나를 찍어 대변하는 것은 불가능해 보인다. 정적이고 차분해 보이는 그들을 종일 노려본다 해도 어떤 생각을 하고 있는지는 알아낼 수가 없을 것만 같다. 다만 한가지 확실한 것은 작가 시선에서 느껴지는 따뜻한 온도이다.

김희수는 다작 하는 작가로 그의 공간에 들어서면 엄청난 양의 드로잉과 페인팅 작업들에 둘러싸이게 된다. 벽면과 바닥을 가득히 덮은 수십 명의 얼굴과 몸짓. 그러나 여기에서 느껴지는 것은 소란스러움이 아닌 평안과 고요함이다. 아예 소리가 없는 것 보다 오히려 편안함을 주는 적당한 잡음, 다양한 음높이의 소리가 모여 이루어진 백색소음 같이 동시대를 살고 있는 사람들 그리고 나의, 평범한 보통의 일상이다.

EverydayMooonday presents HeeSoo Kim's solo show 'normal life'. This is his second exhibition titled 'normal life' followed by her last year series. The show presents vast amount of paintings and drawings of works produced during the last year.

Often times, there are moments in life when you gaze at others without realizing it. These include times when you are on the bus or subway shaking and sitting with utter strangers shoulder to shoulder, or especially when you are in spaces like restaurants, cafes and hospitals. Generally, you have a conversation, stare at your phone or book. At times you daydream with your eyes fixed on a random, endless, and vacant corner somewhere. Within the limits of public space, you create your own time in various different methods. You see things that question whether these people exist in the same space as you do. Other times, you see others and find yourself in them.

HeeSoo Kim focuses on the everyday life. He observes and records his everyday life, from a short conversation with his father, arbitrary feelings to the small and big fragile promises that may break any day. His subject matter is mostly people and occasionally objects. He expresses the subtle emotions of people with his rough lines that seem careless yet delicate. It is not an expression of dramatic explosion of joy or falling despair. Instead, He emphasizes an expressionless face without a single expression. In fact, the eyes of the character that portray his or her innermost emotions are mostly half closed or completely closed. It seems impossible to simply represent their feelings by clicking on a single emoticon. It seems impossible to know what they may be thinking, even after gazing at their calm and stillness all day. The one definite thing is the warm temperature you feel from the artist's gaze.

Stepping into Kim's studio, you are instantly surrounded by an overwhelming amount of drawings and paintings. The walls and floors are fully covered in tens of faces and gestures. Still, what you feel is not noise but peace and serenity. It is just enough noise rather than complete silence that gives it tranquility. It is like white noise compiled of numerous pitches of sound. It is the average normal everyday life of the people and you, living concurrently.
