스트리트 아트 기반의 아티스트인 정크하우스(한국), 스톰(덴마크). 두 작가의 듀엣 전시가 4월 10일부터 5월 24일까지 에브리데이 몬데이 갤러리에서 열린다. 서울은 어느 도시보다 빠르게 변화하고 건물들의생명이 매우 짧은 편이어서 그림을 그릴 외벽을 찾는 것도 쉽지 않고, 작업을 한다고 해도 보존하는 것이 어렵다. 실제로 활발히 활동하는 스트리트 아티스트 플레이어는 손에 꼽는다. 수년간 거리에서 작업을 해온 두 아티스트는 어떤 식으로 도시를 보고 또 구현하고 있을까?

도시와 거리는 정크하우스의 캔버스이자 영감의 원천이다. 10여 년간 작가는 많은 재개발 지역을 답사하고 리서치했다. 우리는 흔히 도시는 차갑고, 인간적인 것과는 좀 거리가 있는 인상으로 도시를 표현하곤 하지만 사실 ‘인간이 만든’ 사물, 산업물, 건축물들로 이루어져 있는 도시야 말로 인간의 냄새와 생명의 기운을 잔뜩 머금고 있는 곳이 아닐 수 없다.

정크하우스는 도시 속 유기적 생명체 이미지를 포착하여 몬스터로 표현해 왔다. 건물들이 부서지고 다시 생성되고 이 과정에서 섞이며 도시는 변성한다. 시대와 기술의 발전과 더불어 이전에는 상상 못한 모습으로 변하기도 한다. 정크하우스 몬스터들도 점차 돌연변이 생명체로, 더 나아가 추상과 도형과 구상의 기하학적 형태로 표현방식도 변화하고 있다.

전시 타이틀이기도 한 Desire Lines는 크리스찬 스톰이 만든 새로운 그림 시리즈로 작가가 보다 직관적으로 탐구하고 싶었던 그라데이션, 패턴들의 추상적 구성이다. 집에서 멀리 떨어진 새로운 환경과 다른 문화와 나라에서 많은 영감을 받는 스톰은 인간으로서 가진 한계를 극복하기 위해 자연스럽게 선과 경로를 만들어 낸다고 말한다. 20여 년간 그래피티와 레터링을 하며 자신이 정말 원하는 새로운 라인을 계속해서 발견해 나가고 있다.

도시에는 계획한 사람이 설계해 만든 길 말고도, 실제 거주자나 지나다니는 사람들의 발자국에 의해 만들어지는 길이 있다.‘비공식적 보행자 도로’ 라는 의미를 가진 ‘Desire Line’. 이 길은 잔디밭을 가로지르거나 평소 쓰지 않던 근육에 힘을 줘가며 울타리를 뛰어 넘거나 나무 사이를 어정쩡한 자세로 비집고 들어가는 어려움을 감수하면서 인간들이 기어코 찾아낸 길이다. 그러다 정말 그 위로 보도블록이 깔려 ‘공식적인 길’이 되기도 한다.

도시 속에서 유기적 생물체의 움직임을 쫓는 두 아티스트의 발자국이 내고 있는 Desire Lines을 따라 걸어보는 시간을 가져보자.

정크하우스는 서울과 멜버른에서 일러스트레이션과 디자인을 공부하고 디자이너로 일을 하다가 2004년부터 작업 활동에 매진했다. 100여 개의 캐릭터들을 만들어 길거리를 돌아다니며 벽에 붙이는 프로젝트를 했다. 거리를 탐방하고 알맞은 곳을 찾아 작업을 펼치고, 다른 여러 나라의 아티스트와 교류하고 협업 하기도 하며 비교적 제약을 받지 않는 스트리트 아트의 자유로운 면에 큰 매력을 느꼈다.

스톰은 코펜하겐 덴마크 프레드릭 버그에서 태어나고 자랐다. 당시 코펜하겐 교외의 십대에게 그래피티 문화는 진화하고 있었고, 전설적인 스타일과 개념을 가진 도시로 유럽에서 명성을 얻고 있었다. 그런 환경에 영향을 받아 14세부터 그래피티를 시작했고, 유럽 전역에서 작업을 이어가고 있다. 색의 그라데이션, 건축 기하학적 요소와의 결합을 바탕으로 벡터 그래픽과 픽셀화 이미지와 같은 자신의 스타일을 점차 확립해 나갔다.

Everyday Mooonday Gallery presents a two-person exhibition by street artists JunkHouse(Korea) and Storm (Denmark) from April 10 to May 24. The urban landscape of Seoul shifts faster than any other cities. As such, the lifespan of a building is very short. Searching for a wall to paint and preserve a wall painting in this environment is difficult. Thus there are only a few active street artists in Seoul. The two artists have worked these streets for a number of years now and we invite you to see how they see and realize a city.

For JunkHouse, the city and the streets are her canvas and source of inspiration. For ten years, the artist has visited and researched numerous redevelopment areas. We often portray our impressions of cities as cold and distant, when in actuality, a city lives and breathes the smell of humans full of life, with objects, products and buildings made by us.

JunkHouse has captured these organic life forms in cityscapes recreating them into monsters. Buildings are destroyed and reborn and in this process things mingle and cities change. As time and technology develop, some things change in ways we couldn't imagine before. JunkHouse monsters gradually mutate further shifting into abstract shapes and conceptual geometric forms.

Desire Lines, is the title of the exhibition as well as Christian Storm’s new series of drawings, an abstract formulation of color gradation and patterns he’s been exploring more and more. Storm is often inspired by new environments, different cultures and countries far from his home. He naturally creates borders and paths to overcome human limitations. He’s been continuously inventing new ‘lines’ over the last twenty years working with graffiti and lettering.

In cities, there are roads built by planning and designing and there are roads organically made by the footprints of the local residents. ‘Desire Line’ refers to these unofficial pedestrian footpaths, paths and roads people create, crossing grassfields, jumping over fences using muscles you usually wouldn’t, and going through tiny spaces between trees. At times, these paths become an ‘official road’ or a paved sidewalk.

Join us in walking along the footsteps of the two artists of ‘Desire Lines’ chasing the movement of the organic life forms inside the city.

JunkHouse finished her studies in Multimeida design and Graphic design in Seoul and Melbourne Australia. She worked as a designer and started her art practice in 2014. One of her major projects includes her creating hundreds of characters and pasting them on city walls. She is attracted to the flexibility of a street artist work style that allows her to search the streets, find the right location, work, collaborate and network with artists from various countries.

Storm was born and raised in Frederiksberg Copenhagen Denmark. During his teenage growing up in the suburbs of Copenhagen. Graffiti culture was evolving and establishing its style and concept becoming one of the famous European cities for graffiti. Inspired by the environments, he started graffiti at age fourteen and later one continued working with interior design project management which sharped his artistic direction. He has gradually established his own style that combines color gradation and architectural geometric elements with vector graphics and pixelated images.
