각자의 영역에서 뚜렷한 작품 세계관을 가지고 있는 노석미 작가와 권오상 작가가 Still Life 전시에서 만난다. 일상에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 정물을 주제로, 권오상 작가의 20점의 조각 작품과 노석미 작가의 16점 회화 작품은 정물에 대한 색다른 관점을 선사한다. 정물은 화초와 과일, 책과 같이 스스로 움직이지 못하는 생명이 없는 물건을 의미한다. 그러나 사전적 의미가 무색하게, 언제나 우리 곁에 머물며 저마다 휴식처럼 놓여있거나 부름을 기다린다. 정물은 누군가의 1분 1초의 시간들이 켜켜이 쌓여 만들어진 기억과 같다. 일상의 모습들처럼 말이다.

노석미 작가는 시원한 붓질, 산뜻하고 강렬한 색감, 특유의 면 처리를 통해 정물을 표현한다. 정물들이 우리의 삶과 함께 하며 반짝거리는 찰나의 순간들에 대해 “빛나는 얼굴”이라 말하며 그들을 화면 안으로 호명한다. 화면 속 투박하리만큼 시원한 면들은 서로 이어져 정물이 되고 저마다의 고유한 색이 입혀져, 마치 다양한 표정을 가지고 우리에게 말을 건네는 듯한 모습을 하고 있다. 이렇듯 노석미 작가의 정물은 화려한 수식어나 기교 없이 담백한 느낌으로 다가와 순수함과 편안함을 선사하고, 이와 더불어 일상의 사소한 순간들을 소중히 여기는 작가의 태도를 담고 있다.

권오상 작가는 조각의 존재론을 탐구하며 큰 범주로써 데오도란트 타입(Deodorant Type), 더 스컬프처(The Sculpture), 더 플랫(The Flat), 뉴 스트럭처(New Structure), 릴리프(Relief) 총 5개의 시리즈로 작업을 이어 나가고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 강화 스티로폼의 일종인 '아이소핑크'로 형태를 만들고 그 위에 직접 촬영하거나 수집한 사진들을 콜라주한 정물 조각인 매스패턴스(Masspatterns)가 주를 이룰 예정이며,이 외에 동일한 제작 방식의 동물 흉상 조각인 버스트(Busts), 콜라주 타입의 나무 부조인 릴리프(Relief)가 선보여진다. 선풍기 위에 의자와 헬멧과 같이 서로 어울릴 것 같지 않은 정물 이미지들은 서로 포개지면서 의외의 조합과 조형미를 나타내고, 작가는 “아무것도 없는 상태에서 손에 쥘 수 있는 여러 가지 재료를 가지고 만질 수 있는 덩어리를 만들어가는 것이 조각”이라고 말하며, 정물에 대한 기존의 형태와 관념을 깨트리며 보는 이에게 신선함을 선사한다.

Still Life 전시는 과거 정물이 표현되었던 정형화된 구도와 방식이 아닌 두 작가가 각자의 특유한 표현방식으로 정물을 재창조해 내는 점에 주목하며, 전시장이라는 현재의 시공간에서 재해석되기를 바라고 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 작품과 그 공간에 머물며 현재의 시점을 뛰어넘어, 정물과 관련된 각자마다의 감정과 추억을 떠올려보길 바란다.

'Still Life' presents two artists, NOH SEOK MEE and GWON O SANG each with distinct worldviews. Gwon presents twenty sculptural works and Noh presents sixteen paintings on the topic of everyday still lifes in unusual perspectives. Still life refers to inanimate objects like plants, fruits and books. As if to put this definition to shame, still lifes in the artists’ works linger around us resting or waiting to be called by someone. Still life is like the memories of someone’s every moment laid upon one on top of another. It depicts daily life.

Noh portrays still life with effortless brushstrokes, simple and strong colors and with a unique approach to arranging the planes. The artist calls still life ‘shining faces’ to the surface of the planes as she captures the split second of its sparkle in our daily life. The coarse and open planes connect with each other creating a still life. Each with its own unique color, it shapes into a variety of human-like facial expressions about to say something. Noh’s still lifes convey simplicity with a sense of genuineness and comfort without any fancy modifiers or trickery. It further envelops the artist’s appreciation for the mundane moments in daily life.

Gwon explores the ontology of sculpture and continues his five series of works from Deodorant Type, The Sculpture, The Flat, New Structure and Relief. In this exhibition, his work mainly consists of shaping forms with a type of high quality polystyrene ‘isopink’, with a collage of photos collected or taken by the artist made into ‘Masspatterns’ still life sculptures. Gwon also presents animal bust sculpture created with the same process, and a collage type wooden Relief work. The still life images that seem unfitting or irrelevant to each other like a chair and helmet are placed on a fan, overlapping and creating an awkward harmony and sculptural aesthetic. The artist states, “Sculpture to me is about starting from nothing and creating tangible mass with materials that you can grab and handle.” He breaks the existing forms and notion of still life and presents a fresh perspective.

'Still Life' focuses on the two artists’ unique approach to reinventing still lifes, away from the formalized structure and method of the past. It hopes to create a new interpretation in the current time and space of the exhibition space. We hope the viewers see beyond the current perspective through the works and space of this exhibition, rekindling individual emotion and memories relevant to the objects.
